County Marriage Records Counties were required by law to file marriage returns beginning in 1795. Consult the Secretary of State page linked below for colonial marriage bonds. Consult the Department of Health page linked below for post-1848 marriage records filed at the state level. The State Archives' holdings vary from county to county.

Marriage records are available from Vital Records from 1919 to present. This record will state that a marriage took place. It will name the two parties, the date of the marriage, and the location of the marriage. To apply to access a marriage certificate, fill out the application provided by the New Jersey Vital Records Website.

The New Jersey Department of State has records of marriages made between 1848 and 1912. They also have some marriage records that were kept earlier than this date. Keep in mind that many marriages were not recorded statewide. Rather, it was local communities that kept marriage records instead.

For genealogical purposes, the marriage must have taken place more than 50 years ago and both parties must be deceased. Otherwise, proof of relationship is required to obtain the record.

In New Jersey, the State Bureau of Vital Statistics and Registration manages marriage records from 1878 to present. Certified copies of these records are only available to the registrant or family members, and proof of relationship is required. However non-certified copies are available to the general public.
